Overview
If you’re looking for a dog that’s smarter than you, this is the Border Collie. It is the “Ferrari” of dogs: high performance, requires expert handling, and is not for everyone. It needs a job to do or it will invent one (like herding children or chasing cars).
Origin & History
Developed on the border between Scotland and England to herd sheep in difficult terrain. They were selected purely for working ability, not appearance, which explains the diversity in their looks. Their famous “eye” hypnotizes sheep.
Temperament & Personality
They are workaholics.
- Energy: Inexhaustible. They can literally run all day.
- Focus: When they lock onto something, nothing else exists.
- Sensitivity: Very sensitive to changes in their environment and their owner’s mood.
Physical Characteristics
Athletic and agile.
- Eyes: Their gaze is intense and piercing.
- Coat: Can be smooth (short) or rough (long), in a wide variety of colors, though black and white is the most common. “Merle” is a popular pattern but carries health risks if bred irresponsibly.
Puppy Stage

From puppyhood, they show their instinct.
- Herding: They will try to herd anything that moves. Vital to correct this early.
- Stimulation: Puzzles and trick training are essential to tire their mind.
Adult Stage

- Sports: They are the undisputed stars in Agility, Flyball, and Frisbee.
- Lifestyle: They need an active owner. They are not happy with just a walk in the park.
Health & Care
- MDR1: Can have sensitivity to certain drugs due to the MDR1 gene. Genetic testing is important.
- Dysplasia: Watch hips and elbows.
- Epilepsy: The breed has some predisposition.
Needs & Routines
- Mental Work: 15 minutes of mental training tires a Border Collie more than 1 hour of running.
- Routine: They love routine and order. Abrupt changes can stress them.
